I had to write a persuasive essay for school and I made mine on the existence of dragons. Before you read remember I don't know as much as I like to believe and dispite the fact that everyone loved it there will be alot of flaws.
Nobody can prove or disprove the existence of dragons. Although there are no known remains that does not mean that dragons did not at one time exist. You must take in to account that they are found in the legends of every world culture even those of south America and Africa predating their European discovery. A professor Carl Sagan attributed this knowledge to a genetic memory of dinosaurs passed down to us through evolution from the lowest form of mammals. Er, I don't think so. While dinosaurs came in many shapes and forms these legends all refer to one creature A dragon. There are only a few dinosaurs that fit the traits of a dragon mainly the winged pterosaurs which most resemble wyverns. Most accounts of dragons describe them as a winged reptile with the head of a crocodile equipped with horns and spines. Looking at a picture of a pterosaur you can see that they lack both those traits. Dragons are also known to have powerful tails another trait which most pterosaurs lack. So I feel it's safe to say these people weren't describing dinosaurs from some distant ancestral memory.
Then what where they describing. It would be easy to disregard the dragon as an non-existent creature if it was solely a legend of a certain region, but we have a creature showing up in all parts of the world. In south America Quatzelcoatl the serpent god of the Mayans and Aztecs was a bringer of knowledge and civilization. Across the Pacific ocean in China in their lore a dragon taught a man the knowledge of writing and civilization. Is it mere coincidence that on two separate continents a dragon had taught people knowledge and heightened their civilization? Also upon comparing the Aztec serpent god to the Eastern dragon you'll see they look very similar.
Dragons indeed did exist at one time or another that is for sure, where are there remains and were have they gone that I cannot answer. Perhaps they're extinct now or they're in hiding. One theory I've heard is they live in other planes of existence and simply chose to leave. As for leaving no remains aside from legend. It could be caused by many things. Have you ever found skeletal remains of a bird? Birds have hollow bones to aid in flight, dragons too would have hollow bones and after decomposition their bones would've become very brittle and in time would shatter to dust. Another theory is, if a dragon could breath fire It would require a mixture of natural chemicals to ignite the flame. Upon death these chemicals would be allowed to set and would in time eat away at the decaying remains.
In any case I've said my two cents what one believes upon the matter of a dragons existence is their own belief but until one is seen alive there will never be definite proof. Just remember, Even today dragons continue to exist in the minds of those who believe, and perhaps they can still be found by those willing to search for them, In that sense dragons will never truly cease to exist.
So what do you think? The last parts were really corney but I was in a hurry (I procrastinated) and it sounded good at the time.
